Since the Vespers is only used as a focal point to drive the main discussion, Runciman turned out an excellent work on the political history of the area, and stayed away from social history, which seems to be the focus of current Medievalists.

If you want to know what was going on the Mediterranean in the late medieval period, runci,an is a great book to read. Runciman discusses the popularization of the pilgrimage movement which was originally frowned upon by the Church. Runciman begins by warning the reader that if he or she cannot cope with a vast cast of characters, then it would be better to put down his book and read a novel.
